Does this mean the end of enshittification?

A Reddit user describes using Claude with REA to dissect Android apps for a smart scale, a cheap smart watch and a TCL air conditioner, reverse engineer their protocols and route the data to their own home server (Home Assistant/Grafana) instead of vendor clouds.

About this case

The post argues that AI-assisted reverse engineering could counter 'enshittification' of consumer software. The author says this is their third app/device where they used Claude plus REA to reverse engineer the vendor protocol and send the data to their own home server: a Withings smart scale, an off-brand smart watch health tracker, and a TCL air conditioner, replacing vendor apps with Home Assistant and a self-hosted Grafana-based app. They note possible anti-piracy concerns but frame it as an end-user win. No repository link, technical steps or demo is provided.

My biggest complaint is that software has stopped getting better - vendors have a great app/service, then make it suit advertisers, not you, ruining your UX - then they ruin it for them, trying to squeeze every last ounce of money out of it. along comes claude with REA ("reverse engineer anything")... I am now on my third app/device of using this combo to dissect the android app to reverse engineer their protocol, and figure out how to send the data to my own home server instead. Withings smart scale, My dinky little cheap no-name smart watch health tracker thing, and a TCL Air con unit. - all shitty apps, eliminated, and instead home assistant for the AC, and my own grafana based app for the health tracker. No privacy issues, not using their shitty cloud... if a new version of their app does something cool, I can ask claude how we replicate that feature, just... without the adverts or nag prompts. a lot of the hand wringing is coming from an anti-piracy angle, but from an end user point of view, I am seeing this as a win.
