macOS Universal Driver for Brother HL-2270DW Printer
A developer used the REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) toolkit and Claude to reverse engineer Brother's discontinued HL-2270DW printer driver and rebuild it as a signed, notarized Apple Silicon-native universal macOS driver, released under GPL-2 on GitHub.
About this case
In an r/MacOS post, software developer jmarler explains that Brother stopped supporting the HL-2270DW printer years ago and never shipped Apple Silicon or universal drivers, and that macOS 27 dropping Rosetta support in CUPS broke the existing driver. The generic PCL driver is too slow because of how it renders bitmaps, so he used the Reverse Engineer Anything toolkit (github.com/morluto/rea) with Claude to recreate the driver. After roughly two prompts he produced a macOS universal native driver implementing the features of the official Brother driver, reusing code from the brlaser project and releasing it under GPL-2. The installer is signed and notarized, and the download plus issue tracker are at github.com/jmarler/hl2270dw-macos. This is a concrete example of using REA for legitimate interoperability with hardware the author owns, rather than circumventing protection measures.

Original text / README
Brother hasn't supported the HL-2270DW printer for many years now, and never released Apple Silicon (ARM) native or Universal drivers. macOS 27 quietly disabled support for Rosetta with CUPS, the printing subsystem of the printer, and my Brother HL-2270DW printer just stopped working. The macOS native Generic PCL driver is incredibly slow due to how it generates the bitmap, causing it to only be able to load one page at a time. I am a software developer working in Cybersecurity, and had heard of the Reverse Engineer Anything toolkit, so I decided to give it a shot at creating a new driver. It took two prompts, but I managed to build a macOS Universal native driver that implements all of the features of the official Brother Driver. If you have an HL-2270DW printer that you are using from macOS, you can download the driver from my GitHub repo at: https://github.com/jmarler/hl2270dw-macos It uses code from the brlaser project, and it is released under the GPL 2 license. The driver package is notarized and signed, so you shouldn't get any warnings installing it. If that is something you need, I hope it helps you out. If you run into a problem, just open an Issue in GitHub and I'll get it sorted. Full disclosure: This was created using the REA toolkit - https://github.com/morluto/rea - and Claude. submitted by /u/jmarler to r/MacOS [link] [comments]
