spo-re | Spore for Apple Silicon

A tool that recompiles the original x86/D3D9 Spore binary to ARM64 and Metal so the game runs natively on Apple Silicon, built with the help of REA. It ships no game assets and works from the user's own DRM-free installation.

About this case

The developer of spo-re used Claude and REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) to create a tool that turns a user-supplied DRM-free copy of Spore (plus Creepy & Cute and Galactic Adventures) into a native Apple Silicon Spore.app, avoiding translation layers like CrossOver or Wine. The repo includes a launcher with Retina/scaling and frame-rate options, access to some original game flags, an intro-skip flag, and working online features with an offline option. Source and instructions are at https://github.com/garnold24/spo-re.

Original text / README

Hey there everyone! I've been working on a tool over the past few days to play Spore on Apple Silicon. With the help of Claude and Reverse Engineer Anything , the tool generates a Spore application that you can run natively (so you don't need a dynamic translating layer, like Crossover or Wine.) It works by recompiling the original x86 and D3D9 binary to ARM64 and Metal. You can find it here: https://github.com/garnold24/spo-re How to use To get started, all you need is Homebrew and your own DRM-Free version of Spore + Creepy & Cute + Galactic Adventures . The tool doesn't have any assets (code, models, audio, images) from Spore itself. It takes what you provide and converts it. It's a one-line command that you point to your installation files, and it produces a Spore.app which you can then throw into your applications folder and run like anything else. Full instructions are in the README. Features Launcher - The tool comes with a game launcher that gives you some control over the runtime, including a few Mac specific settings: full Retina rendering versus scaled frame rate settings that allow you to uncap from 30 to the devices refresh rate or beyond. a display setting that accounts for the camera notch in fullscreen Additionally, the launcher exposes a few of the game's original flags. These let you launch the experimental/hidden editors or straight into game modes (though only cell stage seems to work.) I also threw in a custom flag to skip the intro so that you can launch right into the main menu. Online - Online features are supported. I haven't had any issue with logging in, publishing/downloading creations, or other aspects of online play. If you'd like to stay completely offline, there's an option for that, too. This was really fun to make! I played Spore a ton as a kid and tried so hard to mod it back then. It was one of the things that led me to becoming a software engineer. After seeing all the recomps/decomps going around lately, I wanted to try my hand at it with Spore. I'm pretty happy with the results. I'd love to continue with this and integrate more with the larger modding community. It'd be neat to add one of the community mod loaders to the launcher. Let me know what you think. Feel free to contribute, fork, and use for your own projects! submitted by /u/garnold24 to r/Spore [link] [comments]
