How to Reverse Engineer Anything for Free (REA Agents)
I checked out REA (Reverse Engineer Anything), an open-source tool that connects your AI agent to reverse engineering tools, to see how it actually works and how you can use it yourself. No complicated jargon, just a quick overview of REA, how it works, how to set it up, and two real demos.
REA lets your coding agent look inside an app, even without the source code, figure out how it works, and explain it to you. For apps like Electron apps it reads the app’s code and behavior, and for exe files it uses Ghidra, a free reverse engineering tool, to turn the file back into readable code.
In this video, I show you how to install REA with VS Code, then reverse engineer a simple Electron notes app and see what happens behind the scenes when you click a button. After that, I connect Ghidra and a JDK, and reverse engineer a compiled exe file to get its decompiled main function and strings, then compare it with the original C code.
REA is open source and MIT licensed, so you can use it on your own machine with your own coding agent. It’s still early, so expect bugs and limitations, and make sure you only use it on software you’re allowed to analyze.
